Newton Aycliffe is situated 5 miles north of Darlington on the west side of the River Skerne and is traversed by the A1M and the A167 trunk road as well as the Newcastle to London main railway line and the branch rail route between Darlington and Bishop Auckland.

The town has grown considerably since it was created in the 1940’s and now includes the old village of Aycliffe. Between the two is the second largest Industrial Park in the North, developed during and since world war two.

The Town Centre is currently undergoing extensive redevelopment adding another 16 acres of commercial and recreational amenities.

Newton Aycliffe has an approximate population of 30,000 and continues to expand.

Great Aycliffe Way is a circular footpath around the town through woods, across fields and by flora-lined streams. The 5½ mile (8.8km) path was completed in 1998 to commemorate 50 years since the designation of the new town.
